On Live at Ritual Botanica (Feeding Tube Records), Chris Corsano and Tashi Dorji capture a live set that sounds remarkably clear and well balanced... to the point where it could almost pass for a studio recording. Recorded at the opening date of their tour in Dorji’s hometown of Asheville, North Carolina, the album moves between high-energy passages and quieter, more restrained moments. Corsano is a familiar name in experimental music, and his drumming is as unpredictable as it is purposeful, with an occasional funky edge that keeps things moving. Dorji, a Bhutanese-American guitarist and improviser, is a new discovery for me, and his playing makes a strong impression. The two work well together, leaving enough space for the music to shift direction without losing momentum. A good live document and a welcome introduction to Dorji’s work. Also available on vinyl.
